Non-adherence
with medication in psychotic disorders presents an obstinate challenge
to the mental health team and to patients in particular. It is common,
complex and idiosyncratic, and its etiology may be organic as well as psychosocial.
Despite quantum leaps in psychopharmacology over the past decade, patients
continue having difficulty complying with prescribed regimens between the
potentially life-threatening exacerbations and costly hospitalizations
that ensue. Lack of insight into illness appears to contribute to non-adherence.
This study targets insight into illness within the health belief model
as a factor in adherence with prescribed neuroleptic medication regimens,
and evaluates the effect of the LORS Enabled Dialogue on adherence and
other measures of psychosis and functioning in a random sample of supervised
adult patients.
